Medical Alumni Day

 

In addition to the traditional awards ceremony and class reunion recognitions, this year's Medical Alumni Association program, held on October 16, included two continuing education sessions. Dr. Mahlon DeLong, chair of the Department of Neurology, presented "Recent Advances in Parkinson's Disease," and Dr. Virgil Brown, director of the Division of Arteriosclerosis and Lipid Metabolism in the Department of Medicine, presented "Cholesterol and the Prevention of Heart Disease."

Dr. William L. Roper

Dr. Garland D. Perdue, '52M, received the Medical Alumni Association's highest recognition, the Award of Honor. Dr. Perdue recently stepped down from his positions as director of The Emory Clinic, associate dean for clinical services, and medical director of Emory Hospital to become executive director of the Emory University System of Health Care.

A vascular surgeon, Dr. Perdue has served on the faculty in Emory's Department of Surgery for almost 40 years. He performed the department's first kidney transplant in 1966, and he established Emory's first vascular surgery training program, which was the first such program in the United States to receive accreditation. Dr. Perdue also is co-author, with the late Dr. J.D. Martin, of a history of surgery at Emory.

Dr. Perdue is a Phi Beta Kappa and a member of Alpha Omega Alpha. He belongs to numerous professional organizations and has served as president of the Southern Association for Vascular Surgery, the North American Chapter of the International Society for Cardiovascular Surgery, and the Atlanta Vascular Society. He has also been a member of the board of directors of the Medical Association of Atlanta and the House of Delegates of the Medical Association of Georgia. He is a fellow in both the American College of Surgeons and the American College of Cardiology.

Dr. William L. Roper received the Medical Alumni Association's Award for Distinguished Professional Achievement. He is former director of the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and is currently president of the Prudential Center for Health Care Research.

Dr. Roper received his MD and MPH degrees from the University of Alabama. He is a member of both Phi Beta Kappa and Alpha Omega Alpha. He is also an elected member of the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences. Dr. Roper has a long, distinguished career in public service. He began this career at the state level in Alabama and became a White House fellow in 1982. He served next as special assistant to the President for health policy, as administrator of the Health Care Financing Administration, and as deputy assistant to the President for domestic policy and director of the White House Office of Policy Development before his appointment at the CDC. Dr. Roper has received numerous awards from the US Public Health Service, including the Surgeon General's Medallion in 1993.

Leaders for the upcoming year

In addition to the awards presentation, the day included installation of the Medical Alumni Association's new slate of officers for 1993-1994. Outgoing president William M. McKinnon, '74M, introduced the new president, Dr. Robert P. Cunningham, '52M. Other officers include Drs. Barbara Croft, '78M, vice president, and Walker Ray, '65M, secretary/treasurer. In addition to these officers, other members of the association's executive committee in attendance were trustees Maggie Mermin, '77M, and Robert Whipple, '67M, and co-regents Dorothy Brinsfield and Evangeline Papageorge.
Reunions

Classes ending in years 3 and 8 held reunions. Drs. Napier Burson, '43M-March, and Bill Lester, '43M-December, organized their 50-year reunions. Drs. Richard Blumberg, Ted Leigh, Abraham Velkoff, and Sterling Jernigan, all 55-year alumni, represented the class of 1938. The most senior alumni in attendance this year, Drs. Walker Curtis and John Kimmey from the class of 1928, were special guests at the Medical Alumni Association luncheon.
