Hampton E. Barker, Sr., '32M, of Tuscaloosa, Ala., was honored in March 1993 for nearly 50 years of service to the community of Boaz. The mayor proclaimed a day in his honor and commended his many achievements, such as being the first chief of staff at the Boaz-Albertville Medical Center. Dr. and Mrs. Barker have five children - each of whom chose careers in health sciences - 14 grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren.

When William W. Moore, Jr., '44M, of Atlanta, retired from his neurosurgery practice in 1988, he hung up his scalpel and picked up some schoolbooks. Dr. Moore, former president of the Southern Medical Association and recipient of the 1988 Distinguished Service Award from the Medical Association of Georgia, enrolled at Birmingham-Southern College and earned a BS degree there in 1992. He had first taken classes at Birmingham-Southern in the late 1930s before moving on to Emory's School of Medicine in 1941.

W. Stanley Weinkle, '43C, '46M, was inducted into the Emory Sports Hall of Fame during Reunion Weekend activities.

Grady E. Longino, '45C, '47M, of Dublin, Ga., has served as district director of public health in Ravens County since September 1992.

1940s



Harrison L. Rogers, '48C, '52M, a retired Atlanta surgeon, recently waged a close but ultimately unsuccessful campaign for the Georgia congressional seat vacated by Mitch Skandalakis. (Mr. Skandalakis, the new chairman of the Fulton County Commission, is the son of faculty member John E. Skandalakis, '62G.) Dr. Rogers is former president of the American Medical Association and the Emory Medical Alumni Association.

John T. Yauger, '49C, '52M, announced in January 1993 that he was stepping down as president of Atlanta's Yauger Clinic and retiring from the practice of internal medicine. Dr. Yauger is a former president of the Medical Association of Atlanta.

Richard H. Walker, '53M, of Royal Oak, Mich., received the 1992 distinguished service award from the American Society of Clinical Pathologists. Dr. Walker has served as chief of the blood bank and transfusion service at William Beaumont Hospital for the past 23 years.

S. Angier Wills, '49C, '53M, of Atlanta, was featured in a past issue of Georgia Trend magazine. The article describes how Dr. Wills and several colleagues formed the nonprofit SouthCare Medical Alliance in 1985. Today, the alliance, which is structured as a PPO, has more than 285,000 members, making it the state's largest managed care organization.

James B. Kenley, '54M, of Port Haywood, Va., retired in July 1992. He had served for five years as chairman of the department of preventive medicine at the Medical College of Virginia and for ten years before that as state commissioner of health.

James W. Turpin, '49C, '51T, '55M, of Fairview, N.C., is the 1993 recipient of the International Humanity Award from the American Red Cross Overseas Association. The award recognizes the ongoing good works of Dr. Turpin and Project Concern, a nonprofit agency he started in 1962 that has since brought millions of dollars of medical care to people in Mexico, Vietnam, Ethiopia, Romania, the US Appalachian region, and other places around the world. Its work is now devoted to the health of children.
  The story of Dr. Turpin and Project Concern and their impact on the South Vietnam mountain village of Montagnard, was published in 1966. The book, Vietnam Doctor, offers details of Dr. Turpin's years at Emory and the path he took from the southeastern United States to Southeast Asia.
  Although Dr. Turpin (who is also an ordained minister) no longer directs the day-to-day activities of Project Concern, he remains the organization's guiding light and star fund raiser and also serves as medical director for Health Designs, an occupational health services program operated by St. Joseph's Hospital in Asheville.

Frank Carrera III, '57M, has left Gainesville, Fla., after 32 years there. Since July 1992 he has served as executive medical director of Devereux's Florida Treatment Network in Melbourne.

George A. Neder, Jr., '53C, '57M, of Orlando, Fla., was installed in March 1993 as president of the Orange County Medical Society. He headed the 1,000-member physician organization until February 1994.

Dr. James W. Turpin, '55M



Donald W. Paty, '58C, '62M, of Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, served as secretary-general and host for the 15th World Congress of Neurology held in Vancouver in September. Dr. Paty, professor and head of the division of neurology at the University of British Columbia, is considered a leading authority on multiple sclerosis. He led the study of a new drug for this disease, beta interferon, which gained FDA approval in April 1993.

Theodore J. Borgman, '63M, of New Orleans, recently received a Master of Arts degree in theology from Notre Dame Seminary Graduate School of Theology in New Orleans.

William N. Kelley, '60C, '63M, of Bryn Mawr, Pa., was named to the board of directors of Merck & Co., Inc., in July 1992. A member of Emory's Board of Trustees, Dr. Kelley is executive vice president of the University of Pennsylvania, chief executive officer of the university's medical center, dean of the school of medicine, and Robert G. Dunlop Professor of biochemistry and biophysics. He received the Distinguished Medical Achievement Award from Emory's Medical Alumni Association in 1985 and is a master of the American College of Physicians. His father is Oscar L. Kelley, '34C, '39M, of West Palm Beach, Fla.

Albert W. Pruitt, '59Ox, '61C, '65M, was appointed dean of the medical school and vice president of health affairs at the University of South Alabama in Mobile, on Sept. 1, 1992. Before assuming that position, he had served for ten years as chairman of the department of pediatrics at the Medical College of Georgia in Augusta.

N. Berkeley Powell, Jr., '77M, wrote in to say he has been elected treasurer of the Houston Society of Plastic Surgeons and is the proud father of two children: Claire, 5, and Colin, 2. In a P.S., he asked if the pizza at Everybody's is still as good as it used to be. [Maybe better, Dr. Powell; they just opened a second location.]

Barry S. Werman, '73C, '77M, a board-certified dermatologist, has opened a practice in Stockbridge, Ga. Dr. Werman enjoys composing New Age jazz and playing piano.

MARRIED: Wiley P. Ballard III, '78M, and Jane Elliott Roberts, on Aug. 15, 1992, at Atlanta's St. Philip Episcopal Cathedral. Dr. Ballard practices at Piedmont Hospital and Peachtree Hematology/Oncology Consultants. The couple honeymooned in St. Barts.

Robert T. Harris, 78M, of Raleigh, N.C., has been accepted into the American College of Physician Executives. He is vice president and medical director of Carolina Physicians Health Plan.

Steven D. Johnson, '78M, regional medical officer for the US State Department, had a change of post from Belgrade to Athens because of political problems in Eastern Europe.

David G. McGowan, '74C, '78M, of Philadelphia, is chief of medical operations at the Naval Air Development Center in Warminster, Pa. He is board certified in preventive and aerospace medicine.

William D. Knopf, '79M, an interventional cardiologist with the Atlanta Cardiology Group, co-directed in October 1992 a four-day "mini-fellowship" on complex cardiovascular interventions.

BORN: To Daniel J. Beless, '80M, and Donna Sue Muller, '76C, '80M, '86MPH, of Atlanta, a second son, Patrick Alexander, on May 21, 1993. Dr. Muller is a US Navy senior flight surgeon at NAS Atlanta. Dr. Beless is director of the emergency medicine department at Crawford Long Hospital.

Louis Morales, Jr., '80M, a plastic surgeon, lives in Salt Lake City with his wife, Susan.

R. James Valentine, '80M, assistant professor of vascular surgery at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas, won the 1993 President's Award from the Southern Association of Vascular Surgery.

Cynthia Soghikian Wolfe, '80M, and Christopher L. Wolfe, a member of Emory's house staff in the Department of Medicine from 1978 to 1980, have lived in the San Francisco Bay area for the past seven years. Chris is on the cardiology faculty at UCSF, and Cynthia is in an emergency medicine practice. They have two daughters, Lena and Laura. Sheryl Barsky Rand, '80M, Cynthia reports, also lives in Mill Valley (the same town as the Drs. Wolfe) and has three children.

BORN: To Douglas M. Brandt, '82M, and Catherine L. Brandt, of Greenville, Pa., a daughter, Sarah Margaret, in April 1992. Since September 1991, Dr. Brandt has served as medical director of psychiatry at Greenville Regional Hospital.

Deborah Janicki, '82M, has decided to take a break from medicine for a while, according to an article in the Des Moines Register. Following a year of around-the-clock practice in the one-doctor town of Marengo, Iowa, she is currently driving an 18-wheeler for CRST, a large trucking firm based in Cedar Rapids. Although she plans to return to medicine one day, she says she is enjoying the current change of pace.
  "There's no telephone and no beeper to go off, and there's a lot of freedom," she is quoted as saying. "There are no insurance companies or lawyers to deal with, and the government isn't looking over your shoulder. It's not an easy job, but compared to what I was doing, it's heaven."

Cynthia W. Pettross, '82M, of Marysville, Calif., was appointed laboratory director of Rideout Memorial Hospital in Marysville in September 1992. She and her husband, Bill R. Pettross, '81M, who are both pathologists, have an 8-year-old son named Luke.

BORN: To Randall R. Ozment, '79C, '83M, and wife, Laura, '80N, of Roswell, Ga., their third child, Abby Heather, on June 11, 1992. Dr. Ozment has a private ophthalmology practice.

BORN TO: Pierpont F. Brown III, '80C, '84M, and Clarissa Cunningham, of Gainesville, Ga., their first child, a daughter, Parrish Woodberry Brown, on May 29, 1992.

Christine L. Burns, '84M, of Crystal Beach, Fla., is the only pediatric ophthalmologist serving Pasco and Hernando counties. She also serves on the clinical faculty in the department of ophthalmology at the University of South Florida.

BORN: To James S. Clements, Jr., '80C, '84M, and Katherine Jenke Clements, '78C, of Pensacola, Fla., their second child and first son, James Sidney Clements III, on Oct. 28, 1992. Dr. Clements is an infectious disease specialist with Baptist Hospital in Pensacola.

BORN: To David. A. Dreyfuss, '80C, '84M, and Jennifer Hunt Dreyfuss, of Flossmoor, Ill., their second son, Benjamin Kramer, on May 12, 1993. Dr. Dreyfuss is a plastic and reconstructive surgeon.

Anne Lowich Glaser, '84M, of Atlanta, is now practicing at Georgia Baptist Medical Center.

BORN: To Robert L. Howell, '78Ox, '80C, '84M, and Karen Kuehn Howell, '79Ox, '81C, of St. Louis, a daughter, Elizabeth Pennington, on Dec. 30, 1991. The paternal grandfather, Tom S. Howell, Jr., '51M, of Atlanta, and grandmother, the late Barbara Pennington Howell, '51M, have been long-time supporters of Emory. The younger Dr. Howell is presently completing a hand and microvascular surgery fellowship at Washington University.

William A. Leone, '84M, of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., was inducted as a fellow of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons on Feb. 18, 1993.

MARRIED: W. David Levy, '84M, and Annie Won on Sept. 4, 1992, on the island of Maui in Hawaii. In January 1993, Dr. Levy began working for Hawaii Kaiser Permanente Medical Group.

Thalia M. Martin, '77Ox, '79C, '84M, of Philadelphia, is a clinical assistant professor of pediatric anesthesiology at Thomas Jefferson University School of Medicine.

Think of it as "Northern Exposure," Southern-style. In 1987 David H. Morris, '77C, '84M, went to work as a family doctor in Cumming, Ga., as part of an agreement with the National Health Service Corps. In exchange for medical school loans, he promised NHSC he'd work for three years at the Georgia Highlands Medical Services clinic in Forsyth County. Seven years later, he's still there. No moose sightings have been reported, but a newspaper clipping we received carried plenty of testimonials from the grateful residents of the small, rural town northeast of Atlanta.

Harlan E. Pettit, II, '84M, of Cocoa Beach, Fla., just wrote in to say he "is living and fishing in Florida. ...oh, yeah, and practicing medicine!" He is practicing anesthesiology, to be exact, at Cape Canaveral Hospital. Dr. Pettit, whose son, Harlan Eric III, was born Sept. 9, 1991, recently adopted two stepchildren - Gregory, age 10, and Ashleigh, age 8. He and the family just returned from a trip to New Orleans, where they visited with former classmate Andrew Martin, '84M, who is wrapping up a pathology residency at Tulane.

MARRIED: Edward M. Racht, '80C, '84M, and Cheryl Denise Piché, on June 20, 1992. The couple live in Midlothian, Va. Dr. Racht works as assistant professor of internal medicine at the Medical College of Virginia.

Gladstone A. Sellers, '84M, returned to Atlanta with his family at the end of 1992 upon finishing four years in the public health service. He is now medical director of Mt. Vernon Internal Medicine. BORN: To W. Frederick Thompson, '81C, '85M, and Cynthia Peret Thompson, '82B, a son, Reid Peret, on Jan. 13, 1992.

BORN: To John D. Henry, Jr., '82C, '86M, and Terri Lane Henry, of Stone Mountain, Ga., their second daughter, Rebecca Lane, on May 3, 1992, in Boston. Dr. Henry, upon completing a surgical fellowship in adult reconstruction/total joint replacement at Harvard Medical School, joined Emory's department of orthopaedic surgery.

BORN: To Kenneth D. Rothstein, '86M, and Maria Kane, of Holland, Pa., a daughter, Dana Elise, on Aug. 14, 1992. Dr. Rothstein is medical director of the liver transplant program at Albert Einstein Medical Center in Philadelphia.

M. Alan Baggett, '87M, has joined the Orthopaedic and Sports Injury Center in Griffin, Ga.

MARRIED: Thomas N. Guffin, Jr., '77C, '87M, and Elizabeth C. Nesmith, on Sept. 5, 1992, in Marietta, Ga. The couple live in Brooklyn. Dr. Guffin is completing a residency at State University of New York.

MARRIED: Michael S. Henner, '83C, '87M, and Wendy Sunshine, on June 27, 1992, in St. Louis, where the couple live. Dr. Henner is completing a fellowship in dermatopathology at Barnes Hospital.

Amy I. Mortensen, '87M, has been promoted to lieutenant commander in the US Navy Medical Corps. She is an anesthesiologist at the National Naval Medical Center in Besthesda, Md.

BORN: To Joseph H. Moyers, '87M, and Jennifer Dunn Moyers, '87B, of Atlanta, a daughter, Hayley Johnson, on Aug. 11, 1992.

Darryl J. Tookes, '87M, of Atlanta, opened a medical practice at Crawford Long Hospital's Candler Building in October 1992. The practice, Georgia Surgical Professional Associates, P.C., also has offices in southeast Atlanta near Hartsfield International Airport.

BORN: To Richard N. Baney, Jr., '88M, and Anne C. Baney, of San Diego, a daughter, Victoria Anne, on May 27, 1992. Dr. Baney, a flight surgeon for three years at NAS Miramar, recently completed a residency in internal medicine. He anticipates beginning a cardiology fellowship at San Diego's Naval Hospital later this year.

Todd C. Brightbill, '84C, '88M, and his wife, Carole, moved to Miami in June 1993, where Dr. Brightbill, a board-certified radiologist, is completing a two-year neuroradiology fellowship at Jackson Memorial Hospital.

BORN: To J. Allen Butts, '84C, '88M, and Valerie L. Bialko, '85B, of Gainesville, Ga., their third child, Kari Elizabeth, on April 6, 1993. The paternal grandparents are James A. Paul D. Donnan, '84C, '88M, lives in Havertown, Pa., with his wife, Wendy, 5-year-old daughter, Laura Marie, and 3-year-old son, Ryan Adam. He practices with Greater Philadelphia Health Action, Inc.

Kathleen Nixon Price, '84C, '88M, is a neuroradiologist at the Emory University affiliated hospitals.

R. Scott Turner, '82G, '84G, '88M, has been awarded a Howard Hughes Medical Institute Research Fellowship. The three-year award totals more than $200,000 and will be used to research the role of amyloid precursor protein in Alzheimer's disease. Dr. Turner completed his neurology residency at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, where he is currently a neurology fellow. He lives in Philadelphia with his wife, Arlene, and 5-year-old daughter, Kathryn.

Janice Jordan Dunivant, '89M, a family practitioner, opened an office in the Medical Specialty Building in Dahlonega, Ga., on July 13, 1992. Dr. Dunivant and her husband, Richard, have two daughters. She enjoys raising horses and bass fishing.

Melissa S. Hughes, '89M, joined the staff of Crisp Regional Hospital in Cordele, Ga., in the spring of 1993 after completing a pediatric residency at the University of Kentucky Medical Center in Lexington.

Michael Burns, '87C, '92M, is a pediatric resident at Parkland Memorial Hospital in Dallas, Texas.

MARRIED: Brad H. Goodman, '92M, and Kristen Wigh, '89C, on May 23, 1992, in Atlanta. Dr. Goodman began a pediatrics residency in July 1992 at the Emory University affiliated hospitals.

Sol Jacobs, '88C, '92M, is currently serving an internal medicine residency at Boston City Hospital.

James C. Plaire, '92M, of Valdosta, Ga., began a six-year residency in July 1992 at Indiana University Medical Center. The first two years are in general surgery, and the next four will be in urology.

MARRIED: Betty Blanco (pediatrics) and William Morris, on May 15, 1993, at Emory's Glenn Memorial Chapel. The couple live in Decatur. Dr. Blanco is assistant director of the Emory Pediatrics Ambulatory Clinic at Hughes Spalding Children's Hospital.

Victor E. Corrigan (cardiology) is an interventional cardiologist with the Atlanta Cardiology Group.

MARRIED: Alicia P. Leizman (dermatology) and Dr. Marcus R. Stonecipher, on Sept. 6, 1992, at the Atlanta Botanical Garden.

BORN: To Chris E. Malone (thoracic surgery) and Rosemary Davis Malone, '87N, of Denison, Texas, a daughter, Mary Katherine, on March 2, 1992. Dr. Malone is chief of cardiac surgery at Texoma Medical Center.

Henry D. McIntosh (cardiology) has joined the staff of the Heart Institute, located in Tampa, Fla.

Dominic A. Monda (emergency medicine) is on the medical staff of John D. Archbold Memorial Hospital in Thomasville, Ga.

MARRIED: J. Mark Rheudasil (surgery) and Tracy Jean Barksdale, on Aug. 1, 1992, in Talladega, Ala. After a trip to Bermuda, the couple returned to Atlanta, where Dr. Rheudasil is a practicing vascular surgeon.

Chandrasekhar Sankaran (pediatrics) began practice in McDonough, Ga., in June 1992. As the only pediatrician in the town, he sees children ranging in age from newborn to young adult.

MARRIED: Mark I. Silverstein (radiology) and Deborah Ritzenberg, '78C, '83N, on June 20, 1992. Dr. Silverstein recently completed his residency and fellowship in interventional radiology and now works at Beth Israel Medical Center in New York City.

R. Geoffrey Sweeting (ophthalmology) has a private practice in Nassau, Bahamas. He and his wife, Victoria Digiogia, '82C, have two sons, Nicholas Justin, age 4, and Christopher Benjamin, age 20 months.

Henry W. Minor, Sr., '12M, a retired Atlanta internist, on Nov. 15, 1993, at age 103. Dr. Minor earned his medical degree from the Atlanta College of Physicians and Surgeons, one of four local schools that later merged to form Emory University School of Medicine. He maintained a practice on West Peachtree Street in Atlanta for the next 63 years, retiring in 1975.

Asa Beach, '24C, '26M, of San Antonio, Texas, on May 5, 1992. He was 90.

William L. Pomeroy, '27M, of Waycross, Ga., on Oct. 22, 1993. Dr. Pomeroy, 90, died at home following a long illness. He is survived by a large Emory family, including daughter Ann Pomeroy Spann, '58N; son William L. Pomeroy, Jr., '62M; son-in-law Frank R. Miller, '61M; and brother-in-law Walter W. Weigel, '53M.

Edmond L. Rice, '31M, on Aug. 19, 1992, at Givens Estates, N.C. Early in his career, Dr. Rice worked in China at a mission hospital, moving to North Carolina in 1941 to practice surgery. From 1953 until 1961, he served as medical director and chief surgeon of United Christian Hospital in Lahore, Pakistan. He then practiced in South Carolina until his retirement in 1975. Dr. Rice was a fellow of the American College of Surgeons.

William K. Jordan, '32M, a retired obstetrician and gynecologist from Macon, Ga., on June 9, 1993.

George F. Baier III, '34M, of Atascadero, Calif., on April 3, 1992. A retired community health physician, Dr. Baier was 83.

John Gresham Durden, Jr., '40C, '43M, a general surgeon from Columbus, Ga., on Dec. 1, 1992.

Larry Bregman, '43C, '47M, of Atlanta, on March 3, 1993, at age 70, of cancer. Dr. Bregman retired in 1991, after 41 years in the practice of pediatrics.

Leon W. Clark, '47M, a pediatrician, on Dec. 22, 1992, in Houston, Texas.

Charles M. Jennings, '47M, of Marietta, Ga., on Oct. 12, 1992, at age 73. Dr. Jennings suffered a stroke at a retirement home in Valdosta. He had practiced internal medicine and cardiology in Marietta for 30 years before retiring in 1984.

Henry M. Finch, '38B, '46L, '49M, of Atlanta, retired chief of surgery at Georgia Baptist Medical Center, on May 18, 1993.

Retired US Army Colonel Claude M. Cupp, '51M, of Charleston, S.C., an emeritus faculty member of the Medical University of South Carolina, on Nov. 20, 1993.

Thomas E. Cummings, '50Ox, '52C, '56M, of Rockmart, Ga., on Aug. 26, 1993, following a struggle with lung cancer. Dr. Cummings had practiced in Rockmart since 1961.

Nathan Regal (ophthalmology), of Port Washington, N.Y., on May 27, 1993.

John H. Smith (gynecology-obstetrics), of Bloomington, Ind., on Aug. 11, 1992.

William C. Spencer III (radiology), of Tryon, N.C., on May 26, 1993. Dr. Spencer formerly worked as a radiologist at Crawford Long Hospital of Emory University.
