This year, the Annual Fund program has launched a gift club campaign with the theme "The Power of One," a theme that resonates with our profession of caring. Since our first days in nursing school, we've learned that one nurse can make the difference in patient lives. Each of us can make a difference in the life of our school as well. The following pages contain the names of alumni who made contributions to the school's annual fund between Sept. 1, 1997, and Aug. 1, 1998. (Because of space and time limits, we could not list alumni gifts received after August 1, those targeted for endowed, restricted accounts, or nonalumni gifts. The complete list will run in the university's annual donor report.) We are proud and thankful for all these people who used their personal power to make our school better. While the nursing school's rates of participation and total giving have stayed steady for years, the needs of our students and school have continued to grow. Think of the items written about in this magazine: the new doctoral program, faculty who are blooming as researchers, students who are doing wonderful things overseas, and a new building in the planning. Also note that one semester's tuition these days is $9,025 - plus uniforms, fees, and books, and not including any housing costs. Our school, and our students, need us. Each of you can prove the power of one nurse by making a gift to the annual fund. You can target the Fund for Excellence to support programs within the school, the general scholarship account, or both. A gift of only $10 a month would more than double the average alumni gift. *Lamplighter donors have contributed more than $1,000 Prize-Winning Giving Last year, the School of Nursing launched two prizes for reunion classes: the Reunion Cup for the reunion class that makes the largest total gift and the Spirit of Nursing Trophy for the class with the highest percentage of participation. At Alumni Weekend '98, the first-ever of these annual prizes were awarded. The Reunion Cup went to the Class of 1968, which gave a total of $2,220; and the Spirit of Nursing Trophy went to the Class of 1953 and 1968 which boasted a 49% participation rate. This year, all classes that end with a 4 or a 9 will be competing for these awards. Hard Numbers In 1997-1998, 1,192 donors (26% of alumni) gave a total of $75,251 in unrestricted gifts to the School of Nursing. The average gift was $63.44.
