About the Mosaic

The Medical Science History Mural is a 66-ft. long, 3-story tall mosaic in the lobby of the Woodruff Health Sciences Center Administration Building at Emory University. Installed in 1996, it is the work if Italian-born artist Sirio Tonelli, who is known for mosaic work throughout the United States and Italy. The mosaic tells the story of medical sciences from 10,000 BC to the present, including achievements such as the development of x-rays to the graduation of the first woman from a U.S. medical school.

Interested in seeing the mural in person? The WHSCAB building, at 1440 Clifton Road on Emory's Atlanta campus, is open to the public during normal weekday hours. A brochure available in the lobby not only gives background information but provides a key to the identities of the over 30 historical figures and events pictures on the mosaic.
