Dr. Sanfilippo joined Emory after serving The Ohio State University as Senior Vice President for Health Sciences, Dean of the College of Medicine and Medical Center CEO at The Ohio State University, beginning in September 2000, and as Executive Dean for Health Sciences beginning in April 2004.
From 1993 to 2000, Dr. Sanfilippo was the Baxley Professor and Chair of the Department of Pathology at Johns Hopkins. He led the formation of the Johns Hopkins Comprehensive Transplant Center, serving as its first Director of Research. He joined the Duke faculty in 1979, where he ultimately served as Professor of Pathology, Surgery, and Immunology, director of the Immunogenetics-Transplantation Laboratory, and chief of the renal and transplant pathology services.
During his tenure at OSUMC, significant gains were made in its mission areas of research, education and clinical care. External research funding tripled from $60 to more than $170 million; the Health System doubled its revenue to over $1.2 billion and moved from a $57 million operating deficit in FY00 to $78 million in net income in FY06. Under Dr. Sanfilippo's leadership at OSUMC, the institution was recognized nationally for its achievements, including the largest jump in US News & World Report's rankings of America's best medical schools over the past five years -- from 44 to 32, and 13th among all public medical schools. The Medical Center's hospitals were recognized by U.S. News & World Report's listing of America's Best Hospitals and moved into the top 20 by number of Top Specialties recognized.
With more than 250 publications and $20 million in personal research grant support, Dr. Sanfilippo has been an active leader in transplantation, pathology and academic medicine. He has served on the editorial board of 13 professional journals, has been elected president of seven academic and professional organizations, and received numerous awards and recognition. He is a member of the boards of the Georgia Cancer Coalition, Georgia BIO, and the Metro Atlanta Chamber of Commerce. National leadership roles include the Association of Academic Health Centers Board of Directors and Chair of the Council on Research and Science and the American Association of Medical Colleges Institute for Improvement of Clinical Care Advisory Board.
Dr. Sanfilippo received his BS and MS degrees in physics from the University of Pennsylvania in 1970, and his MD and PhD in immunology as a Medical Scientist Training Program Fellow at Duke University.
