Lisa Newbern is Chief of Public Affairs for the Yerkes
National Primate Research Center, one of eight National Institutes of Health–funded national primate research centers. During her more than 15 years of healthcare-related public relations experience, she has worked as a strategist, program director and client services manager, all of which relied on her strong writing/editing, media relations, crisis management, special event and client service skills.
As the lead PR officer at the Yerkes Research Center, Newbern is responsible for increasing recognition of the center as a premier research facility critical to advancing science and improving health.
Her experience also includes working for a leading international public relations agency, where she designed and managed numerous consumer-marketing programs and helped strengthen working relationships between the agency's international offices on behalf of clients with worldwide programs, and the headquarters office of a national non-profit organization, where she developed and implemented national public relations campaigns, including media relations and public service advertising programs.
Newbern received her degree in communication from The Florida State University. At Emory, she is one of only 12 recipients of the university's 2007 Award of Distinction; this is the highest award the university bestows upon staff. She serves as an officer of the President's Commission on the Status of Women and is a mentor for the MentorEmory program. In addition, she is a member of the Public Relations Society of America and has more than 500 hours as a volunteer at Atlanta's leading children's hospital.
