ATLANTA -- Sept. 14, 1997 -- The newest of EMORY HEALTHCARE's health centers, opening today at the State Bridge Office Park near the Chattahoochee River, will be the largest, most comprehensive component of The Emory Clinic outside the main clinic facility on the Emory University campus in DeKalb County. The 80,000 square foot free-standing facility will house more than 20 specialists in addition to 10 full-time primary care physicians.

"We are passionately committed to expanding and sharing EMORY HEALTHCARE's world of knowledge closer to home for residents and businesses in this vital community," says Michael M. E. Johns, M.D., executive vice president for Health Affairs, Emory University, and chief executive officer for EMORY HEALTHCARE. "The Emory Clinic North is designed to deliver Emory quality care with maximum convenience."

Located in North Fulton county, the new clinic is a convenient drive from Gwinnett, Forsyth, Cobb and Cherokee counties and is accessible from 1-85, Ga. 400 and 141.

"The Emory Clinic North is the only facility completely designed and built to provide a full array of primary, specialty and diagnostic services for The Emory Clinic," says Rein Saral, M.D., director of The Emory Clinic, and president, EMORY HEALTHCARE. "This facility marks the first time we have moved a full range of our well-known specialist physicians off campus and into the community."

Emory North physicians will offer primary care in the areas of internal medicine, occupational medicine, gynecology-obstetrics and pediatrics. The combination of primary and specialty care in The Emory Clinic North can be seen "as an important extension of the health care centers which have developed across greater metropolitan Atlanta since The Emory Clinic began its off-campus expansion four years ago," says William Winkenwerder Jr., MD, vice president for Primary Care, EMORY HEALTHCARE, and associate director, The Emory Clinic. "This partnership will allow for a seamless communication between physicians and specialists, ensuring patients the best care possible."

In addition, the clinic will have a staff of Emory specialists in the fields of cardiology, neurology, neurosurgery, general surgery, orthopaedics, orthopaedic surgery, plastic and reconstructive surgery, gastroenterology including endoscopy services, surgical oncology, medical oncology with infusion services, psychiatry, dermatology, dermatologic surgery, urology, otolaryngology and specialty gynecological services including infertility, oncology and urogynecology.

"We are very proud to be bringing some of the finest specialists from the Emory system into this community," says Penny Castellano, M.D., director, Emory Clinic North. "We will combine this convenience with the other advantages that Emory has to offer. The result is that our patients will have easy access to nationally recognized experts in almost every field of medicine."

The facility will also include a full-service laboratory, dispensing pharmacy, comprehensive cardiology services and digital radiology -- a breakthrough method of "filmless" X-ray technology. This process will allow radiologists to send X-ray images electronically to all of a patient's consulting physicians simultaneously. It also makes X-rays more accessible and more transferable for patients and their doctors. The Emory Clinic North will have a full-service diagnostic imaging center which will include magnetic resonance imaging, computerized tomography and nuclear medicine imaging.

A dedicated two-story, 400-car parking deck also is adjacent to The Emory Clinic North, and provides convenient, free parking to patients.

Architect for the new facility is Wakefield Beasley & Associates, Atlanta, and developer is The Myrick Company, developers of the 45-acre State Bridge Office Park complex in which the new clinic stands.

The Emory Clinic North will operate Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The facility is conveniently located near such communities as St. Ives, Sugarloaf, Country Club of the South, Polo Fields and Windward. For appointment information, call The Emory Clinic North at 770-814-1000.

EMORY HEALTHCARE incorporates all of Emory's health services into an integrated whole. It includes The Emory Clinic and its 15 health centers, Emory University Hospital, Crawford Long Hospital of Emory University and Emory-Adventist Hospital at Smyrna.
