ROLLINS SCHOOL of PUBLIC HEALTH
2001-2002 Donor Report

Dear Friends of the Rollins School of Public Health,

The tragic events of September 11, 2001, the subsequent anthrax crisis, and the threat of bioterrorism have dramatically enhanced the public’s understanding of public health and increased our visibility as a leading provider of public health education and research. Faculty members are hard at work preparing the public health leaders of tomorrow to face a new and uncertain world. Friends, alumni, foundations, and corporations have generously responded to increasing programmatic, scholarship, and endowment needs with an outpouring of support, resulting in our most successful fundraising year to date.

During the past fiscal year, the endowment of the Rollins School of Public Health increased 26% and now stands at more than $27 million. Building an endowment to provide long-term support for ongoing programs and the flexibility to seize new opportunities remains among the school’s highest priorities. Several gifts helped move us closer to our goals. The O. Wayne Rollins Foundation pledged $4.2 million to create the Center for Public Health Preparedness and Research and the Rollins Chair of Public Health Preparedness. The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation gave $5 million to establish the William H. Foege Fellowships in Global Health and the O. C. Hubert Charitable Trust pledged an additional $1.4 million to complete funding for the William H. Foege Chair in Global Health.

While these gifts are noteworthy, we are equally grateful for the individuals listed in the following donor report. With less than 1% of our students currently receiving scholarships, virtually all must rely on student loans. Your gifts to the RSPH Annual Fund and our endowed scholarship funds help lighten their load, making it possible for the Rollins School of Public Health to compete for the nation’s best students and insuring our future as one of the best schools of public health in the nation.

We are proud of what has been accomplished through your generosity and hope that our efforts to improve health and prevent disease throughout the world will continue to merit your confidence and support. On behalf of our students, faculty, and staff, please accept my deepest thanks for your role in our success and your commitment to the critically important work of the Rollins School of Public Health.

With my gratitude and all best wishes,

Kathryn Heath Graves, M.Ed., 93 MPH
Assistant Dean for Development and External Relations
