Celebrate
milestones while
striving for new ones
This issue of Momentum magazine marks an exciting time
of milestones and new beginnings. We start a new year, the fifth
(or sixth, depending on how you count them) of our new millennium.
How time flies! It doesn’t seem that long ago that we all
were looking forward with great anticipation to the dawn of the
21st century. We should never forget the feelings of wonder and
resolve that fueled our imaginations–wonder at what the new
century would bring and resolve at what we could make of it, each
in our own way as well as collectively, in our work, with our families,
and in other aspects of our lives. |

One
of the big milestones we mark is the 150th anniversary of Emory
University School of Medicine (SOM). As this issue’s cover
story details, the SOM has seen a fascinating 15 decades of significant
change and achievement. From modest, but very promising beginnings,
the SOM has evolved and grown, with a dedicated faculty and strong
leaders, to become one of the very best schools in the country.
Even now, when its students and faculty are on a steep trajectory
toward even higher levels of achievement, the SOM is once again
raising the bar by undertaking a complete review of its curriculum
to ensure that our students will be best prepared for the demands
of 21st century health care, research, and related pursuits.
There is much else that is new and
exciting throughout the Woodruff Health Sciences Center (WHSC),
including anniversary milestones we will mark this year for Emory
University Hospital (100th), Yerkes National Primate Research Center
(75th), and the Nell Hodgson Woodruff School of Nursing (100th).
But far more important than the anniversaries themselves is the
extraordinary work being done within these institutions and throughout
the WHSC. We will continue to bring you some of the many highlights
of this
work.
One final milestone and new beginning
that I would like to bring to your attention is one for the magazine
itself. With this issue, we welcome our new editor, Catherine Harris.
Catherine is replacing Marlene Goldman, who had been our editor
since the founding of Momentum and who did an outstanding job managing
and helping build Momentum into the first-rate, award-winning publication
that it is. Marlene has taken her terrific skills to WHSC’s
development office, where she now serves as director of communications.
Catherine Harris comes to us from a strong and diverse background
in journalism and publications. Immediately before being named editor,
she was a freelance medical journalist, speciaizing in coverage
of medical ethics, public health, and institutional research compliance
programs. Previous positions include three years as an editor with
American Health Consultants, a publishing division of Thomson Healthcare
Communications, and a stint as a reporter and copy editor for the
Columbus-Ledger Enquirer in Columbus, Georgia. Catherine is a graduate
of Auburn University with a bachelor’s degree in journalism.
Please join me in thanking Marlene
and wishing her all the best in her new role and in welcoming Catherine
as our new editor. We can expect great things on both counts!
