1999 Nurses Alumni Association
Award Winners

Each year during the Alumni Reunion banquet, the Nurses Alumni Association (NAA) presents awards to two outstanding nurses.

The Distinguished Nursing Achievement Award honors a person who has achieved distinction in research, teaching, nursing practice, or administration in an academic or public institution. The 1999 winner is Mary McCabe, 72BSN. McCabe, director of the office of clinical trials at the National Cancer Institute, is nationally known for her work on incorporating nursing aspects of care, such as symptom management and quality of life, into the management of experimental drugs.

The Award of Honor is given to an alumnus who has rendered distinguished service to the NAA, to Emory, or to the profession of nursing. The 1999 winner is Jane Lipscomb, 79N, 91MN, a nurse midwife from Americus, Ga. Lipscomb has been instrumental in bringing excellent nursing care to her community and is a role model for the community nurse practitioner.

Also at the Alumni Reunion banquet, honorary memberships in the NAA are given to outstanding friends of the school. The 1999 memberships went to the following:

Dr. Alice Vautier, assistant vice president for nursing at Emory Hospitals and a dedicated supporter of the nursing school, has helped students finance their education and transition from the classroom to the workforce.

Dr. Elizabeth Sharp, a national nurse leader and mentor to Emory nursing students, started the nurse midwifery practice at Grady Hospital as well as the education program at the school of nursing.

Barbara Reich, a professor emerita of the school, was honored for the many years she taught Emory nursing students anatomy and physiology and for her unwavering support for them as they entered the profession.
