Dear Alumni(ae), We all remember what it's like to be in medical school -- and to yearn for an older, wiser confidante and friend. The Medical Alumni Association has been working with the School of Medicine to nurture a new program that gives alumni the opportunity to mentor a medical student during their first and second years. The time commitment is negligible (med students likely have even less time to spare than you do), but the rewards can be vast. If you're interested in mentoring a student - having them over for dinner, taking them on rounds for an hour, getting to know them a bit and letting them get to know you - please contact Emory's office of alumni relations for the medical school at medalumdev@emory.edu. If you live outside of Atlanta, mentoring a student may be impractical, but there's another way you can be of help to students. Periodically, the school sends letters to those of you in various cities across the country, asking if you'd be willing to be a resource to a fourth-year student seeking residency training in your area. This could range from simply a phone call or email to a personal contact when the student is in town. If you are interested in participating or would like more information, please use the email address listed above. And of course there's always that other way you can help medical students -- by supporting scholarships, for example, and/or the Alumni Teaching Fund, which was launched by William Orr, 47M in honor of two of his classmates. In closing, I would like to express appreciation for all the help and advice lent to the Alumni Association by Board Regent Dottie Brinsfield, who died in March. She will be greatly missed.
